Why does cats bring me gifts?

February 3, 2024

Cats bringing "gifts" like mice, birds, or other small animals is a behaviour rooted in their natural instincts. e

There are several reasons why cats exhibit this behaviour:

1.  Hunting Instinct: Cats are natural hunters, and even domesticated cats retain strong hunting instincts. When they bring you a "gift," it's a reflection of their hunting success. In the wild, cats may bring prey back to their group (family or kittens) as a way of sharing resources or teaching their young to hunt.

2. Nurturing Behaviour: In the context of a cat-human relationship, bringing you a captured animal might be seen as an expression of trust and affection. Your cat may view you as part of its "family" and wants to provide for you in the same way it would for kittens or fellow feline companions.

1.  Teaching Behaviour: Cats may bring prey items to their owners as a way of teaching them to hunt. In the wild, mother cats often bring back injured or dead prey for their kittens to practice hunting skills. Your cat may be trying to teach you to hunt, considering you part of its social group.

2.  Attention and Recognition: Cats may bring you gifts to seek attention or as a way of showing recognition. If they receive positive reinforcement, such as praise or petting, when they bring you a "gift," they may repeat the behaviour to get more positive attention from you.

While the gesture is a natural and instinctual behaviour for cats, some owners find it challenging, especially when presented with a deceased animal.

If you want to discourage this behaviour, you can try providing your cat with toys that mimic prey or spending more interactive playtime with them to satisfy their hunting instincts.

It's essential to approach this behaviour with understanding and patience, as punishing or scolding your cat may lead to stress and confusion.
